Franzensburg Castle – A Habsburg Fairytale

Built from 1798 under Emperor Francis II/I, Franzensburg cCstle combines medieval romanticism with dynastic identity. Its walls contain spolia from monasteries, castles, and palaces from across Austria. The lavishly furnished rooms convey the history of the Habsburgs and turn the castle into a place where the past is deliberately interpreted.

Franzensburg castle between collection and artwork: What are Spolia?
Spolia are reused historical architectural elements taken from older buildings and deliberately incorporated into new structures as symbols of tradition, power, or cultural ambition. Inside Franzensburg Castle you can find magnificent wooden ceilings from Zwettl Abbey or Rapottenstein Castle, over 800‑year‑old wall paneling from Klosterneuburg, and Gothic stained‑glass windows from Steyr.

Franzensburg can be visited daily during the season (from Easter to All Saints’ Day) as part of guided tours. Our cultural guides take you on a journey through the history of the Habsburgs. Two different tours are available to choose from:

Museum tour through the state rooms

In 18 historic rooms – including the bedroom of the mysterious castle lady, the dining hall, and the dungeon – you immerse yourself in the imaginative world of Franzensburg castle and get to know its builder, Emperor Francis II/I.

Tour “High Tower & Across the Rooftops”

165 steps lead from the dungeon up to the viewing platform of the High Tower. From there, a 360° panorama opens over Laxenburg Palace Park, reaching as far as the Hohe Wand, Vienna, and the Leitha Mountains. This tour offers unique perspectives of the castle’s rooftop landscape.

Weather permitting: Yes. In case of bad weather (rain & wet conditions) or extreme heat (from 34 °C), the tower and rooftop tour cannot take place for safety reasons. In such cases, a regular museum tour will be offered instead.

Accessibility: For structural reasons, the tower and rooftop tour through Franzensburg Castle is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Arrival – How to reach Franzensburg Castle

Franzensburg Castle is located in the heart of Laxenburg Palace Park. You can reach the fortress from any of the park entrances (P1, P2, and P3) on foot (about a 30‑minute walk) or by taking the “Laxenburg Express” park train. More information on getting to Laxenburg Palace Park.

Due to its island location, Franzensburg Castle can be reached either by bridges or by ferry. For a first visit, we recommend the enjoyable short crossing by ferry.
